Web Safe Colors for web design professionals

What are the Web-Safe Colors? Should web design professionals use the websafe colors for their web pages?

An important aspect of web site design is the color scheme. Eventhough modern computers have no problems in dispalying 16 Milion colors, when it comes to web design it is wise to pay attention to the colors we use. Also known as browser-safe colors, the web safe colors will display correctly (without dither or shift) even on 8-bit monitors, either on Mac or PC platforms.

If you don't want to limit the correct displaying of your web pages on all systems and platforms, you should use the websafe colors (browser-safe colors). There are 216 websafe colors, which will display correctly on Mac and PC platforms, in Netscape, Internet Explorer or other Internet browsers. This is a reason for which many web design professionals still use web-safe colors when designing web pages, eventhough systems with 8-bit display are less and less present.

Why 216 and not 256 web safe colors?

There are 40 colors which are unique for Mac and PC and which will display differently on these two platforms. So, from the operating system point of view, we have 256 - 40 = 216 web-safe colors.

In web design, the colors are defined as combinations of Red Green and Blue, in different amounts. A six character code ("hexadecimal" or "hex" code) defines each color and the Internet browsers "read" this code for displaying the color. The amount of Red, Green and Blue for each color is specified by two caracters in the "hex" code. For Web-Safe Colors this amount will be defined by "00", "33", "66", "99", "CC" and "FF", where "00" is the smallest and "FF" the highest value. There are 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 possible color combinations with these values and we get to 216 web safe colors (browser-safe colors).

Playing it safe with Web-Safe Colors (Browser-Safe Colors)

If you use the web safe colors for graphics, backgrounds, text (fonts) and other elements you place on your web site, you make sure that your web pages will display correctly even on 8-bit Mac or PC systems, in Internet Explorer and Netscape.
