"Hiring SEO specialist"… How?

Of course, you will not post an "Hiring SEO Specialist" ad to hire one, but let's see how to choose a good SEO expert. Often called "SEO consultant", "SEO company", "SEO firm" or "SEO services"... just choose the one which best fits your SEO needs. There are some easy steps to take and few things to remember, in order to successfully select a good SEO specialist:

Examine the SEO services market

A SEO specialist / Company should have a site well-positioned in Google, Yahoo, MSN, and/or in other popular search engines, for keyphrases like: seo specialist, seo expert, seo services, seo company etc. If money is no object for you, pick up URLs from the Sponsored Links section. If you are on a tight budget, go deeper into the natural (organic) search results. Make a list with the SEO specialist sites you like at a first glimpse - let's say 20 entries, for the start. Start checking each one of them... If you see anything looking like: "guaranteed top placement", "top 10 in Google in 2 weeks" etc, discard that SEO Company from your list. Natural, long-lasting SEO is more like an endurance race, not a "100 meters" one. A SEO specialist talking about a 6 months search engine optimization and marketing campaign is, most likely, an honest one.
Check out for how long the SEO expert has been in business.
Each SEO specialist with proven results will have a list of achievements - optimized sites with high rankings for relevant keywords in popular search engines. Check yourself those websites. Contact their owners and ask for references about the SEO specialist you're investigating.

How to "smell" a   b.a.d   SEO professional

SEO specialists involved in   b.l.a.c.k.h.a.t   techiques will do you no good if you want to be present on top for a long time, so it is a good thing to know how to spot these "SEO experts".
Don't fall for:
- a SEO Company which initiates the contact with you via unsolicited e-mail, phonecall or mail;
- a SEO expert that asserts having an exclusive relationship with popular search engines, or prioritized sumbission channels;
- the SEO specialist that "guarantees" you top placements "in no time";
- that SEO expert which promises you ever lasting results for a one time fee: WWW is alive - it grows, it changes, it evolves and therefore SEO means permanent work and "maintenance".

How to "smell" a good SEO professional

An honest SEO specialist will tell you that:
- there is no problem in providing you with a list of clients, for reference;
- the endeavor will start with a thorough analysis of your site and you will get a report;
- the SEO campaign will take several months;
- you should accept an ongoing subscription fee for the SEO services;
- you should expect content, structure and navigation changes on your web pages;
- you will have to be prepared to constantly update the content of your site.

Ask questions to your prospective SEO service providers

A good SEO specialist will have no problems in telling you which SEO techniques will apply on your website. Erase from your list those that want to make you think that SEO is some sort of voodoo magic, something you shouldn't try to understand. Here are 10 questions for your prospective SEO specialists:
1. How do you plan to raise my site's rankings?
2. What SEO techniques do you employ?
3. How long will it take to see the improvements?
4. Why should I preffer you over other SEO experts?
5. What do you offer for the money you charge?
6. Which are your previous successful SEO projects?
7. What kind of SEO reports do you submit to me and how often?
8. Is there a limit for the number of keyphrases you optimize my site for?
9. Do you optimize my pages for popular keywords?
10. Should I expect traffic on my site after ranking improvement?
As answers, it is OK for you to hear words like: meta tag and alt tag editing, content development, SEO copywriting, link popularity building, natural search engine optimization, ROI (Return of Investment) prediction, website conversion enhancement, anti-spam methods, monthly reports, design, development, programming, marketing, link development, popular keywords.
It is NOT OK to hear words like (bad words have dots between the letters): fast results, guaranteed top placement, number 1 in Google,   s.p.a.m,  keyword   s.t.u.f.f.i.n.g,  d.o.o.r.w.a.y   pages,  c.l.o.a.k.i.n.g,  hidden text / keywords,  h.a.l.l.w.a.y  pages, dynamic content,  s.c.r.a.p.i.n.g,  b.a.i.t -and- s.w.i.t.c.h.

Hiring a   b.a.d   SEO specialist may get you ranking high for your keywords in a short time and with less money spent. After a while, though, you can expect a drop in rankings or even worst: you will be banned by search engines for 6 months, 1 year or even forever. At that point the b.a.d SEO expert is long gone with your money.

Hiring a good SEO specialist should be your goal if you plan to stay longer on the World Wide Web. Eventhough it will mean modifying your web pages, paying more money and waiting longer to see good results, you will get in return: steady high rankings and traffic, constant presence in search engine results pages and, of course, cost-effectiveness in the long term.
